I had a patient once who hated to exercise. Not only hated to exercise, but she found the whole thought of sweating as disgusting. When I heard this, I knew that there was little chance that I could help this woman. If a patient will not exercise, there is almost no lasting benefit I can offer in physical therapy.
I saw this patient for a few courses of therapy over a several year period and really just offered her temporary relief. I tried in various ways to make her exercises simple, easy, and very comfortable. It did not matter. This woman did not like working out, so she didn’t. Read the rest of this entry »

A Gathering of Industrious Men
One of the problems with old guys working out is that they don’t. Men, especially men from my father’s generation and my grandfather’s generation were an industrious sort. They did not typically have time for play or for exercise. Maybe the occasional round of golf, but fitness? Pfft! There was work that needed to be done. And the time for doing it was now.

Middle aged spread: To those unfamiliar with the term, Middle Aged Spread refers to how people, as they approach their mid-30’s, start gaining weight. There have been plenty of theories about why middle-agers gain weight, from blaming the hormonal changes of menopause to a natural tendency of our metabolism to decrease as we get older.

I was going to post the ‘All Things PT’ diet plan today – even though the last thing we need is another diet plan. The regular reader might remember a review done by Julia Belluz / Science-ish which found that every diet will help in losing weight, if one sticks to the diet plan. This begs the question, ‘Why do we need another losing weight diet plan?’ Good question. We don’t.
Instead, I was going to post on what, in general, constitutes a healthy daily diet. As I was researching this, I stumbled upon the Harvard Medical school guidelines for a healthy diet, and these guidelines are so close to my own, that I am accepting these as the official All Things PT guidelines to healthy eating – with a few modifications, of course. Losing Weight in an exercise program means having to workout even when you really don’t want to. Last Saturday was a cold, nasty, windy day, and running outside did not sound like much fun. My wife and I decided to have a run at Hunter’s Orchard, (in Delta Township, near Lansing, Michigan). Hunter’s Orchard is a walking / running trail that has a half mile asphalt path along the Grand River. The trail then turns into gravel and loops back through the woods for a total circuit of 1.3 miles. It is a low lying trail offering protection from the wind with lots of trees and hills.
