Sunrise - time to work out
Q: What is the best time of day for working out?
A: It depends on the reason you are exercising, and it depends on you. Are you exercising for strength, flexibility, aerobic conditioning, pain control? Many experts discourage intense exercise late in the day as this tends to interfere with sleep. In my case, I sleep much better after a good workout, so it is not unusual for me to do a short run after 9:00 in the evening, and then get to sleep by 11:00. I wanted to write a post about Six Shoulder Exercises for Arthritis. I wanted to describe how our advanced shoulder program helps those with arthritis problems. I have had numerous men and women with arthritic shoulders that have responded very well to a simple home exercise program. I wanted to talk about how our program will help shoulders move easier, how you will have less pain, so you can do simple daily chores like getting dressed, or putting dishes up in the cupboard or adjusting your seatbelt. These are all difficult for people with arthritis in their shoulder.
Then I realized none of those things will get you excited about exercise, and, if you are not excited about exercise, you will not exercise. If you do not exercise, then I am not helping you.
So, instead of writing about a patient who you might relate to so you will exercise your shoulder, I am going to write about babies. More specifically, holding babies. Read the rest of this entry »

I recently had a grey haired patient, ‘Sam’, who was having a problem with walking. It seemed that the longer winter progressed, the more trouble Sam was having. I wanted to get this ‘Old Guy’ on a home walking program, but as it was still winter, walking outside was not an option. Instead, I told Sam that I wanted him to walk 3-4 days a week at the local mall. He replied, “Four days a week? That’s a lot.” In reality I wanted him ‘Mall Walking’ seven days a week, but I did not think that would happen, so I asked for 3-4 days. Read the rest of this entry »
