Sunrise - time to work out

Q: What is the best time of day for working out?

A: It depends on the reason you are exercising, and it depends on you. Are you exercising for strength, flexibility, aerobic conditioning, pain control?  Many experts discourage intense exercise late in the day as this tends to interfere with sleep. In my case, I sleep much better after a good workout, so it is not unusual for me to do a short run after 9:00 in the evening, and then get to sleep by 11:00. What is the best type of mattress to sleep on?

The Marine Physical Fitness Test and the Law Student

September 12, 2011

I would like to introduce “Hero”. Hero, is the daughter of a friend of mine who many years ago saved my life . Ever since, she has been “Hero”. (I will write about that story sometime later, not today.) Hero is attending law school in Chicago. She is doing well getting good grades and succeeding in many opportunities she is being offered. She is on a journal editorial board. Last year she spent two months in China on an international law assignment. Prior to college she was a talented athlete in high school in Swimming and in Irish Step Dancing. She was not, however, a runner.

In the past year “Hero” decided that she wanted to join the military serving as a JAG (law) officer. In this pursuit she needed to take up running so that she could pass a military fitness test. I think what Hero went through to prepare for the fitness test was quite interesting and I asked her to write about the experience. The following is her story.

You can catch up with “Hero” on her own blog Stilettos 2 Sportsbras – healthy living for women here. Read the rest of this entry »
